Some Insurers Deny Coverage To People Taking Drug To Prevent HIV

State well being officials need to shield people who take drugs to stop transmission of HIV from being denied medical insurance.

The drug Truvada — also referred to as PrEP — is over 90 % effective blocking HIV transmission. Those that use it wouldn’t have HIV but are at risk.

However some insurers deny insurance coverage to individuals taking the drug regardless of its effectiveness.

Bennett Klein, an lawyer for GLAD (GLBTQ Authorized Advocates & Defenders), led a case towards an area insurer for denying insurance coverage to individuals who took PrEP. He joined WBUR’s Morning Version host Bob Oakes to speak concerning the continued efforts to end those insurance coverage denials.
