Family first: T.J. Lux resigns as boys basketball coach after eight seasons at Merrillville



It was a tough day for T.J. Lux.

The Merrillville boys basketball coach had to say goodbye to his gamers and the varsity that was his second residence because the 1984-1985 season, when he first started going to video games.

Lux has resigned after eight seasons. He’s leaving to spend extra time together with his three sons, A.J., Jack and Troy, and his wife, Mary.

Lux knew this was day was on the horizon.

A.J. shall be a freshman at Crown Level next yr and he’s going to play basketball. Lux didn’t need to miss his games. Lux has informed the group his choice.

“I don’t know if I had the best words,” he stated. “It’s been emotionally wrecking. It’s simply been an unbelievably troublesome choice. I’ve developed nice relationships with the gamers and administrators for the previous eleven years.”

Lux arrived at Merrillville as an unpaid assistant for former coach Jim East within the 2008-2009 season. He spent the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons as East’s prime assistant earlier than taking up as head coach.

Lux finished with a document of 132-67. During that time, he gained two regional titles and three sectional titles. No present coach aside from Lake Central’s Dave Milausnic has gained a regional as a Duneland Athletic Conference coach.

Lux stated the gravity of the day hit him when he acquired a text from Valparaiso College sophomore Mileek McMillan.

McMillan, a 6-foot-eight forward, performed for Lux. McMillan was checking in to see how Lux was doing.

“That was actually robust,” he stated. “It just charged me up emotionally. You develop such nice relationships with these gamers.”

Lux graduated from Merrillville in 1995. He helped lead the Pirates to a 26-2 report and an appearance within the state championship recreation in 1995, once they lost to Ben Davis by some extent.

He played at Northern Illinois, graduating as this system’s all-time main scorer.

Lux performed six seasons abroad earlier than returning to the world. His father Tony was the Merrillville district superintendent.
