‘A Star Is Born’ cinematographer on working with Lady Gaga and first-time director Bradley Cooper

In the pre-daybreak hours of Jan. 22, cinematographer Matthew Libatique looked at his telephone and observed that director Spike Lee was making an attempt to get in touch. “It was, like, ‘Why the … is he calling me at 5:30 a.m.?’ ” says Libatique, who had been director of images on Lee’s films “Inside Man,” as well as “She Hate Me” and “Chi-Raq.” “My girlfriend stated, ‘It’s in all probability the Oscars,’ and I used to be like, ‘Oh, I forgot.’ ”
