North Lafayette Street home destroyed in Saturday morning fire

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

A residence in the 200 block of North Lafayette Street in Mobile was destroyed in a fire Saturday morning.

According to the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department, at about 7:26 a.m., MFRD units were dispatched for reports of smoke and flames visible from an unoccupied structure.

Upon arrival, crews reported that the structure was “fully involved,” said MFRD spokesman Steven Millhouse.

He said crews quickly protected surrounding exposures from potential ignition. The home directly involved, however, took much more work to extinguish flames.

Millhouse said the residence has been deemed a total loss.

Neighbors informed MFRD officials that the structure has been vacant for some time but that there had been workers present as recently as two weeks ago.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is currently under investigation, Millhouse said.
